Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer. The procedure was first developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs in the late 1930’s at the University of Wisconsin and was originally called chemosurgery.  The procedure has evolved substantially over the years, to its current form which has been used for decades to treat skin cancer and is called Mohs surgery (also known as Mohs micrographic surgery) in honor of its developer.

Mohs surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic. During Mohs surgery, layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed, stage by stage, and examined microscopically until only cancer-free tissue remains. The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove the entire skin cancer, while doing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This often leads to a smaller defect in the skin, simpler reconstructive surgery, and a more acceptable cosmetic appearance after surgery.

Mohs surgery is used to treat many types of skin cancer, most commonly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  It offers the highest possible cure rate and is an improvement to standard surgery (local excision), which involves removing the visible cancer and a small margin of healthy tissue all at once. Mohs surgery allows surgeons to verify that all cancer cells have been removed at the time of surgery. This increases the chance of a cure and reduces the need for additional treatments or additional surgery.
Dr. Miller is a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery.  For more information about Mohs Surgery, please visit the official website of the American College of Mohs Surgery.
